Chapter 3

We found our home completely ransacked.

I knew we should have tried to leave, but I couldn’t resist coming back to the apartment. When you spent your time on the run, even a place where you only live a week starts to feel like home, and I needed to see it again.

I wished I hadn’t.

Everything that was ours was gone and the apartment was destroyed, defaced.

I stood at the entrance for a few moments, looking inside, seeing the scene of devastation, my rage mounting up.

Was this the reason why Medusa hadn’t tried to take us in the diner? Because she wanted to show me the devastation she could unleash in my life, to make me understand I would never be free of her influence?

I closed my eyes and breathed deeply.

Aura poised her hand on my shoulder and I smiled, gently, trying to hide the despair I was feeling. I was sure I failed; the blonde always seemed to know how I felt, but I didn’t want to burden her.

“Let’s go.” I said, shaking my head and trying to think. I doubted Medusa’s men left our money behind, even if we escaped the vampire, we would have to find some way to survive.

Aura shook her head, making me freeze in place as I was confronted with her denial. I don’t think she had ever refused doing anything I said, and I found myself stopping more due to surprise than anything else.

She leaned in close and looked me right in the eyes. I could see so many emotions in those blue orbs that I didn’t know what to say. I couldn’t identify them all, but one that came to the forefront was anger.

I understood that.

Aura didn’t want us to leave, this was our home and no one should be allowed to force us out.

I opened my mouth to try and convince her, to say we would be safer running away, but Aura shook her head almost like she knew what I was going to say.

She probably did.

Aura leaned into me and put her arms around my figure, her head leaning on my shoulder. Then it was as if she spoke directly into my mind, and I understood that she wasn’t telling me to stay for her sake but for mine.

Aura thought I deserved the home we had made here, together, even if we had only been here for a week. She wanted us to fight, to refuse to play Medusa’s game and stand together against the vampire.

I should have refused her, told her it was too dangerous.

I didn’t. I simply leaned back and looked into her eyes before nodding, resigning myself to whatever came.

Aura smiled in reply and then leaned in and kissed me.

It took me completely by surprise.

I had no problem admitting that I had a crush on her, that I found her attractive and sexy, but I wasn’t expecting her to feel the same. Why should she? Unlike her I didn’t look like a fairytale princess, my beauty wouldn’t be enough to start wars.
